Lights Are Off - lights.are.off
Doomsday would probably be a huge bummer... you and everyone you know annihilated - every human achievement, every memory, every cone of gelato erased. But if we’re choosing apocalypses out of a lineup, if the world is going to end, I think a monster might be our kindest method of exit.
Nearly every mythology has a creature whose job it is to wipe things clean come Armageddon - it’s strangely universal. A...

The Dragon Paradox

"Dragons aren't real in the same way that fish aren't real" - JRR Tolkien The problem started with a book. Actually, I suppose it started with a show, “Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real,” that I watched, enraptured, late one school-night. And you could say it made me a little… obsessed - not just with dragons, but with the paradox right there in the show’s title. If dragons aren’t real, the show ask...

Sympathy for the Machine

My battery is low, and it's getting dark. The saddest piece of art I’ve ever seen is about a robot. Actually, it is a robot. It’s a mechanical arm by artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu that must continually push a leaking liquid back into its body to function. And here’s the thing - I know, rationally, this art installation is not alive. Like every machine, it is, by definition, something artificial....
What Happens After a God Dies?
Просмотров 2,1 млн4 месяца назад
I promise this is an interesting question. There are many stories in which divine beings come to an end. But what happens after a deity perishes? Would they… decompose, their holy forms rotting away to nothing? Or would they linger, their figures forever changing the surrounding environment, or even becoming an environment themselves? Would they ever really go away? 0:00 Fallen Gods 1:20 The Dr...

Sympathy for the Monster

“Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy… They are not evil by choice. The Most 'Alive' Game Ecosystems

Why is it that some game ecosystems feel like they exist long before you press play? A meditation on fictional worlds that seem to have a life of their own. The Beauty of Games With Dead Worlds

Calling a world ‘dead’ usually isn’t a compliment. But maybe it should be. A meditation on games with stunning and creative worlds that have, in their own way, died. When we think of dead worlds, we typically don’t think of beauty. This is especially true for video games - where the word dead usually implies a setting is lacking in meaningful content. But I want to challenge this assumption, to...

Thumbs up for a Kaiju Banana apocalypse!
Look...im an American so my thoughts reading this is wow that would be one hell of a hunt spanning the inter world
I'm not complaining (because I'm a fan too) but where would Video Essayists even be without Kyle Gabler's soundtrack for World of Goo?
“The Tarrasque appears in the city of Los Angeles-“
I get the release of responsibility that some outside force would bring, because then it would weirdly justify the lack of accountability we seem to have. :(
Monsters are in the Apocalypse because real monsters did kill nearly entire groups in the stone age and primitive past. Tigers, Bears, Lions, Elephants. All these creatures left cultural imprints on our species that we now turned into Apocalyptic myth fodder.
Unicron is a Don, all business
I’m surprised “Don’t Look Up” was never mentioned, as it (while parodical/exaggerated) perfectly illustrated the “just ignore it” mindset of the pandemic, and of external apocalyptic threats as a whole.
Interesting how Pacific Rim wasn’t brought up. While yes, it’s basically a love letter to “big dumb monster movies”, the background is pretty revealing about human psychology. -Despite giant monsters wiping out thousands/millions of ppl, viewers treat the threat (& the jeagers that oppose them) as more like entertainment. (Which, up until watching this video, I thought was unrealistic due to the inevitable reaction of “it’s too soon for those jokes”.) -Despite the Pacific Wall being untested, ppl have the vain hope of “we’re doing something about the monsters, so it must work out in the end” - until the wall gets breached. -And relating to the opening premise of this video: bc the threat is external, it’s a whole lot easier for ppl to rally together & focus on the “giant obvious enemy” rather than rally together & focus on the “massively vague & abstract enemy” that more mundane threats appear as.
Bring it, Giant Banana!
Ive been really loving your content. Now its time to binge all your old stuff.
I agree the world ending would honestly be way cooler than just some earthquake or solar flare if it was a kaiju

Okay I got to come back later, I'm too sad for this right now
5:48 i beg your pardon HARMLESS?
The Alien is the humanoid version of the shark.
My favorite apocylpse is Dead Space, imagine seeing the moon crack open and a beast crawl out, the thought of giant pillars changing the ones you love into mindless killing machines, making crowds into things that are made to kill and infect more.
Everyone here is neurodivergent
mfw a wolf eats the sun: ⚫ "I don't see the problem, I don't see anything really"
I had seen that show and I have that book. And I love dragons. I'm so glad I'm not alone on this.
this is the equivalent of eldritch bliss
The most scary apocalypse is imo the nuclear war or something which is related to radioactivity. you can see big monsters and other stuff but radiation is silent and kills without anyone can see it, smell it or feel it.
16 minutes in and we still aren't talking about Godzilla, what the HECK. Edit: ok just needed to wait a few more minutes
iM SO HAPPY that people are talking more about Carol and the End of the World
Oh my goodness that dragonology book was a nostalgia blast
personally i'd say dragon is a sub category the main group being draconic/draconian those are the only phrases that don't refer to one as a sole it encompasses drakes, wyverns, wyrms and the famous quadrupedal winged dragon would fit.
I FORGIT ABOUT DRAGONS A FANTASY MADE REAL
If we're talking about a giant monster killing everyone being a kindness, it actually makes more sense to me the further back in time you go. The end of the world for most small, isolated communities would have been much less grand in scale than global destruction, to them it would be more like famine, drought and/or disease, slow horrible and near unavoidable deaths... Some giant monster showing up would indeed be much kinder.
_"... ironically, it's the gentlest ending we could imagine ..."_ 40K Tyrannids would like a word.
nuclear weapon radiation lasts like a few weeks
As a Muslim, it's said that near the end, Dajjal (Probably translated to the Antichrist in Christianity) ride a giant monster as his ride. I think humanity know that giant monsters are real and we subconsciously depict that in our cultures as a warning.
Beautiful and poignant, as always. Really putting into perspective how I am feeling these days about the state of the world. And reminding me how much I love giant monster endings, and not atomic bombs. Jesus christ. Radiation is so lovecraftian. It scares the shit out of me.
It scares me to my core that entire generations still believe in the dark false narrative of climate change.
omg, what movie is this humanoid monster from at 0:06? I have seen it elsewhere.... Nevermind! Hellboy (2019)!
Brother, I have started coming here for somewhat silly yet very interesting videos about xenobiology and the like And yet lately you've started to make me shiver with each video, and I, for one, am here for it. Keep up the good work, much love ❤
It really shows you how wild evolution can turn out to be
Even trough i know lot of people dont know this i find really interesting that even trough in the lets say Catholic part of the Europe there are only bad dragons as in the English you have just 1 word for this type of being. In Slav region its much different. Bulgarian and Serbian mythology has 2 types of dragons. Ones who "evolved" from the fish and they can be good(even look like a people) they are protectors or just a non violent friendly creatures. Other type dont have translate on English other than dragon. Difference is that they "evolve" from the snakes, they are aggressive, dangerous. Here we call them Ale or Aždahe, Aždaje . In Serbia we celebrate Saint George too, when you look it on eng you just see that it says "St. George Shoots the Dragon". Here we have the same saying "Sveti Đorđe ubija (this part is important) aždaju"- "St. George Shoots the Dragon" which is not only meaning that he kills some random dragon, he kills Aždaju the pinnacle of evil. Dont want this to marked as some religious talk, i just want to closely draw parallels of understanding the dragons through the cultures🐉🐉🐉
"I Hope it Ends with a Monster" goes hard.
Just find the channel and i absolutly lowe your style and the unsatteling yet somehow comforting wibes those vids five
this was released at the perfect time for the apocalypse splatfest
28 years old and I'm still obsessed with the HTTYD universe. It's by no means my whole personality, but I can't help myself but draw some fanmade dragon concepts every now and then. And I'll admittedly say I'm excited for the HTTYD park to come out in Universal.
I’m at 18 minutes in and not a single pic of Draco from dragon heart I literally had the VHS on constant repeat for years in my room in my old tv/vhs player I have nearly every line memorized ahhh the memories and yes they’re wyverns I literally laughed out loud
It just ends by people disappearing*
Global warming is a myth.

suddenly hearing music from signalis is such a treat, great music choice there
